They are installed using standard tooling (e.g. spanner, socket set, etc.). When the nut or bolt is fully tightened, the hexagonal drive head is designed to security off as additional torque is applied, leaving the security bolt or the threaded conical lower collar of the security nut in position on the standard bolt or stud thread, thus making these products permanent fixings.

Security Nuts improve security by preventing machine threads and nuts being undone. Upon tightening, the hex head of the Shear Nut (Vandel/Tamper Proof Nut) shears off, leaving the conical nut base which can not be undone with a spanner.
